Head Start
Head Start is a child development program for three- and four- year olds, including children with special needs. Head Start also offers services to the family. Parents may take part in special trainings and events that help them learn and grow. Parents and teachers work together to plan appropriate activities so children learn to accept themselves and others and explore their world.
Education and Family Involvement
A Holistic Approach to Learning
Head Start offers an inclusive educational program that focuses on social skills, language development, physical growth, and foundational concepts. Our program supports children with diagnosed disabilities, ensuring every child has the resources needed to flourish. We offer two flexible options for families:
Head Start Program (September – May):
- Available in Pipestone and Nobles County, children attend four-hour classes, Tuesday through Friday, with a monthly 1.5-hour home visit.
- In Nobles County, we also provide a seven-hour class option, Tuesday through Friday, along with monthly home visits.
- Nutritious meals are served during each session.
Early Head Start Program (July – July):
- Available in Murray, Pipestone, Rock, and Nobles County. Families receive weekly 1.5-hour home visits, with opportunities for social interaction at Head Start sites 2-3 times per month.
- Nutritious meals are provided to support healthy development.

Who We Serve
Eligibility for Head Start and Early Head Start:
- Children ages 3 or 4 (by September 1st) from families meeting federal income guidelines.
- Children with disabilities and those at risk.
- Early Head Start supports children from birth to age 3.
Transportation
Convenient and Safe Transport
Head Start provides limited transportation to ensure that families have access to our program. Bus boundaries and routes are adjusted each fall based on current needs.
Health & Nutrition
Supporting Healthy Growth
To keep our students healthy, Head Start requires a physical and dental exam each year, with up-to-date immunizations before entering the classroom. We provide nutritious meals and snacks daily and offer education on health, nutrition, dental health, and mental well-being for children and their families.
Parent Involvement
Parents as Partners
At Head Start, we recognize that parents are a child’s first teacher. We encourage parents to volunteer in the classroom, participate in Family Nights, and engage in a variety of activities that foster a deeper connection to their child’s learning experience.
